Septic Permits by County in North Carolina

The company that pumps your tank is permitted by the state. The system in your yard is permitted by your county. That second file is the useful one: it holds your system type, tank size, drain field layout and every repair ever approved.

Who holds your system records

Soil evaluation, permits to construct, operation permits, repairs, expansions and inspections all happen at county level. Each of the 100 counties runs its own environmental health office, and that office holds the permit file for your property, including tank size and system layout. The statewide rules those offices apply were rewritten and took effect on 1 January 2024.
